Subject: The Cynical Cynics 2004/1

Message:
Hello team,

A new numbering of team threads, I guess you will understand how that works ;-)

I’ve had a very busy month, so keeping up with the teamscores and the teamthread was something I had to let go. Also I’m playing chess much slower. My avarage time per move was something like 16 minutes and went up to 23.7 hours.

I will start over with keeping up with the teamscore. I’ll start with the match that started today, we play a match with Finland – Suomi

board #1451173 _____ raylopez (1579) – jouni (1564)
board #1451174 _____ raylopez (1579) – jouni (1564)
board #1451175 _____ omus (1531) – elmeri (1541)
board #1451176 _____ omus (1531) – elmeri (1541)

board #1451180 _____ docd (1497) – hokkaido (1489)
board #1451181 _____ trailblazer (1459) – petepawn (1476)
board #1451182 _____ trailblazer (1459) – petepawn (1476)
board #1451183 _____ wuzzer (1446) – keijo42 (1474)
board #1451184 _____ wuzzer (1446) – keijo42 (1474)
board #1451185 _____ cm2003 (1288) – ilari (1239)
board #1451186 _____ cm2003 (1288) – ilari (1239)

We can be proud of our team, two months ago we had a score of –15 and we are now back on +25. We did (and still are) playing a lot of matches so we can get more points but we also can have a setback, we’ll see what will happen. The most important thing is having fun in playing chess.

At this moment we are on place 55 of the scorelist and place 30 of the rating list

At this moment we’ve played 74 different teams. Against 33 we have a negative score. Would you all agree that it would be an idea to try to play with this teams again and try to make our score at least even?

Let’s talk about our mini tournament. The first one is finished (due to the fact that quirquincho resigned both his last two games due to his absence)

The result: we all played 16 games

1. demuziekdoos 15
2. sdr46 13
3. quirquincho 10.5
4. docd 9
5. omus 8.5
6. raylopez 8
7. diogenes 4
8. deancolmer 3
9. strauss32 1

I’m ready to start a new round if we are all ready. At this moment this is the status

I noticed that cm2003 still has a lot of games to go in his mini tournament but umpito is playing his last two games. He is doing very well in that tournament, at this moment he is on first place and I believe he makes a very good chance to win this tournament!

Perhaps kinghenry is able now, since we are past jan-13, I will ask him in a personal message. I asked the persons with the questionmarks in a private message if they are intrested.

I have the following idea about team tournaments:

1. We start a tournament as soon as we have 5 players available.
2. You are allowed to play in only one team tournament at the same time.
3. If you are finished in a tournament you are put on the list of available players
4. Fathers and sons are not allowed to play in the same tournament.
5. All tournaments are unrated.
6. You must let me know in a private message if you are available or not, so if you finished all your games in a team tournament you must tell me and I will put you on the list for the next tournament.
7. The person who started the tournament (I will ask a person to start a new tournament as soon as 5 players are available) is responsible to make it a invitation tournament only and invite the 4 other persons. This person is also responsible to tell the team about the outcome of the tournament as soon as it is finished.

What does this mean for this moment? 11 players are available at this moment so 2 tournaments can be started and one players must wait a while (I’m willing to be that one).

If the 5 players with the questionmarks do not respond within the next 5 days I will devide the 10 players in 2 tournaments and ask two players to start the tournaments.

I will let you know as soon as possible if we play two or 3 tournaments.

Chess notes — A couple of weeks ago we wrote about anthropologist Robert Desjarlais’s musings in his work “Counterplay - An Anthropologist at the Chess Board’’ in respect to the mystical motives to play chess, an area of activity in great part outside of economic incentives. A recently developing illustration of playing for the love of the game is the monthly Grand Prix tournaments at the Boylston Club. There have been seven so far, and they offer only small prizes for those who have earned the most points at the end of the year. The entry fee is a mere $7 for club members and $10 for nonmembers. They have been immensely popular. Although these chess tournaments are not a draw for players dependent on chess for ...

Michael Adams and Nigel Short ready for rare battle — The British chess championship, which starts in Sheffield on Monday, is the strongest in the chess event's 107-year history, with almost all of England's top grandmasters taking part. There will also probably be a rare head-to-head between the former world finalists Michael Adams and Nigel Short, who are both in good form. Adams tied first at the World Open in Philadelphia, Short at the Commonwealth Open in South Africa. The other interesting prospect is a clash of generations as the long supremacy of Adams, 39, and Short, 46, is challenged by the ambitious and fast-rising David Howell, 20, and Gawain Jones, 23, who aim to take over the top boards in the national team. It is hard to see beyond ...

Chess on the China road — Greetings from China! I am writing this column from my hotel room in Ningbo as I attend the 2011 World Team Chess Championship, which runs from July 16 to 26. Although I lived in Europe for four years (1988-92), this is my first trip to Asia. I feel privileged to witness the U.S. team as it battles hard against a tough field in an attempt to earn a medal and represent our nation on the world chess stage. I was invited to be a coach for the U.S. team, which is made up of three-time and reigning U.S. Chess Champion Gata Kamsky, 2006 U.S. Chess Champion Alex Onischuk, 2008 U.S. Chess Champion Yury Shulman, four-time U.S. Chess Champion Yasser Seirawan and 19-year-old chess phenom Grandmaster Robert Hess. Chess: Ulf Andersson, positional master — Andersson rarely makes a direct attack: he wins by subtle improvements in position. DK: I've been wanting to tackle positional play in this column for some time, but couldn't think of a good way into a topic that is just too vast – until inspiration came with the arrival of Grandmaster Chess Strategy, by Jurgen Kaufeld and Guido Kern (New In Chess, ÂŁ19.95). The title is bland, but the strapline reveals the content: "What amateurs can learn from Ulf Andersson's positional masterpieces". Andersson is, for me, an enigmatic chess player: he rarely makes a direct attack on his opponent's king, preferring to exchange pieces and gently improve his position – and against strong chess players this frequently leads to ...

This means we have a problem. 13 available players do not fit in two tournaments. I’m willing to be the odd one out so we can make a 7 persons and a 5 persons tournament but then someone must be willing to manage that team (superdonald can do the other one). wuzzer didn’t answer my message but I found out that he is playing in a tournament so he cannot join. We can ask a non member if he is intrested (and try to get this person in our team) to fill up the open space.

We started two new team mini tournaments a few minutes ago:

The CC-A mini tournament
1. demuziekdoos
2. pigonthe7th
3. kinghenry
4. docd
5. umpito

the places 6 and 7 are for halfpast_yellow and bigmick. I cannot invite them due to the fact that they have set the vacation flag. As soon as possible they will be invited

The CC-B mini tournament
1. superdonald
2. raylopez
3. boscoe
4. diogenes
5. sdr46
6. omus

place number 7 is for misiek but he has vacation flag out so is not able to be invited. As soon as he is able he will be invited.

I’ve split the available players into two groups so the ratings avarage would be the same in the two mini tournaments. I also made sure that the fathers and sons are not in the same tournaments.

Enjoy your games.

My recent beautiful results

Message:
Hi Team,

I'm pleased to report four straight victories in pursuit of our glorious cause.

As Black against Jobelix of For USSR, I won a 55-move Sicilian, in which he had a pawn advantage, but incorrectly advanced his pawns against my king-side doubled pawn formation. This, and some other mistakes, allowed me to achieve passed pawns on the king side, to compensate for his passed pawns on the queen side. The ending showed the value of placing your rook behind your opponent's passed pawn. Even though his pawn was farther advanced and his King was more active than mine, he couldn't advanced the pawn past the seventh rank. His rook was helpless, and his King was busy keeping an eye on my passed pawns. We're 9 games up on For USSR.

As White against Ramrock of Yeshua's Army, I won a Ruy Lopez after trapping his knight on f6. We're up three games against the Army. Good luck to Omus, Trailblazer, and Anchorman!

Labyrinth Rive of Phoenix Rising misplayed an English Opening (stay away from those tricky hypermod openings, guys!), allowing me as Black to advance both my center pawns to the 5th rank. Then a cute little combination on the 10th move won a piece, which due to his further mistake turned out to be his Queen.

As White against the same player, I won a Ruy Lopez by means of a combination, which I'm rather proud of, on the King's file, on moves 11 to 14. I then blundered away the gained piece but fortunately he allowed me to recover it by means of another pin, this time on the Queen's file.

So we're off to a good start against Phoenix. Good luck to Pigonthe7th, KingHenry, and WizardofChess!

That's all for now,

Bob

Hello team

Let's start by congratulating all the persons with the good results. And to omus, let's hope your 50 Hail Marys and 10 Our Fathers will help you ..... ;-) Just kidding, if you tried your best and you enjoyed the game that's all that is important in chess, also in teamgames.

To all our non paying members: please make sure you leave some places open for team games. I now challenge a team (with some of our non paying members), the non paying member starts/joins a few games so he plays his maximum and the other teamcaptain can't accept my challenge anymore due to the fact that one or more players from our team are no longer available. It happened several times now and it makes it impossible for me to challenge other teams if I can't be sure if you will still be available.

Example: the non paying member is allowed to play 20 games in total. Let's say he wants to play a maximum of 4 teamgames. I would ask this person not to play more than 16 games at the same time so I can assure you your 4 teamgames and other teamcaptains will be able to accept. It happened a few times with me to that I had to decline a challenge because the opposing team used a member that was not available anymore.

Enjoy chess.

to draw or not to draw?

Message:
I would appreciate some advice from some of the better players on the team. I have just offered a draw (which was accepted) on board gameknot.com/chess.pl?bd=1409462

The game was a bit boring to be honest and I know I made some errors early. It got to a situation where all I could see happening was moving rooks around and around forever, what do you think…should I have offered a draw?

Thanks in advance

B

Hmmm, tough one to call. Its one of those matches which would have gone on forever, with neither side having a clear advantage. You are probably right to go for the draw.

White might have been able to continue with lines like:

36. Qg4 g6 37. h4 Kf7 38. h5 Kf6
36. Kf2 g6 37. Qc4 h5 38. Qb5 Kf8
36. Kf2 g6 37. h4 h5 38. Re1 Rd8

But honestly I think that the draw was the best outcome.

Record for the last ten team games.

+6 -3 =1

My last lost was just realy bad play. I won a few games in a row and was playing without thinking much. Every game should be played like the person you are playing is better than you and that you could lose the game.

Paul (demuziekdoos) Right now I'm playing ilari and he has put up a vacation flag for 20 days but I have looked and he is making moves in other games is there any thing I can do???????????

REcently i was playing a chap who was waiting till the last to play his moves. He only had a King and a few pawns left and i had my Queen. He then set postponed for a few weeks!! Thats worth a moan!!!

In your case the chap probably has a few internet probs and may be able to move occasionally at a friends house or he may have an intermitent problem. It looks fair enough to me, although I believe you can cancel a postponement, but in this case i dont think that would be fair.

Boscoe...draw seems fair to me.

Hello team,

A small match just started, we play a match with WE SOLD OUR SOUL FOR ROCK 'N' ROLL

board #1502265 and board #1502266 _ snakeking (1498) – cavallo_dopato (1455)
board #1502267 and board #1502268 _ cm2003 (1290) – noodles73 (1290)

These are the first games for snakeking for our team. Enjoy your games and good luck.

cm2003 : Perhaps you could ask this person in a private message why he is playing if he posponed. The things omus is saying can all be true, just ask him. If he will not answer and plays on in other games then you can cancel the postponement.

boescoe : I also believe that game was a draw. I didn’t take a very good look at it but my first impression was that a draw is a good result.

I’m not sure what you mean... his last move was Rd1 and I would have moved my rook back to B8 (as had no other ideas)

If you mean what would I have done if he then went to Re1 I would have played Rd8 and exchanged pawns… but I don’t think this would have happened.

The line I was looking at was:

36 Re1 Rd8
37 Qxe4 Qxd5

The pawns are still even, but White now has an outside passed pawn, which can be a significant advantage in the endgame. Whether it would be decisive or not I don't know. Bottom line: It looks to me that you were smart to offer a draw, and maybe he shouldn't have been so quick to accept!

the team mini tournaments

Message:
Hello team,

Unrated will say that there are no rating limitations to who is able to join (be invited). The result of the games will affect your personal rating.

Both mini tournaments have all the players in it, only raylopez is still pending in the B tournament. I hope he will join very soon. If - for what reason - he is not able/intrested anymore we can replace him by snakeking, I saw he became a paid member. I will ask raylopez if he is still intrested in a private message.

This is post 49, so I will fill this thread up with number 50 and start a new one at once.
