I wouldn't recommend chess programming for a novice programmer, but if your'e still interested you should check out the alpha-beta algorithm and also find some decent board evaluation algorithms. There are probably many implementations of board evaluation around, and the alpha-beta algorithm should be easy to find if you do a search. PS! Send me a pm if you want to learn more, and I'll tell you what I know about the subject.
