Is here anybody who has the books of Kotov with the title: Think like a grandmaster or the other title: Play like a grandmaster? I want to know if those two books are related or just stand-alone. If so, what is part one?
They say those books are the best together with mein system for tactics. So I'm curious about it.
Tell me all about.

"Think Like a Grandmaster" was the first book, and it does stand independently. Be warned: It is difficult to read. While most call it a classic, some berate it for teaching the reader to think like a machine. You can look it up at amazon.com; several readers there have written short reviews. Silman recommends it in the suggested reading list at the back of "Reassess Your Chess."

I read both of these books back in the 70s, and they were quite thought-provoking, though difficult. Kotov's "Tree of Analysis" doesn't work for everyone, but it helped me a great deal to organize my thinking otb and not unnecessarily
repeat analytical variations. (On the other hand, I seldom go back to look at them.)

Basically they are books for people truly aspiring to get to where the title of the book suggests they are going - i.e. the material is quite advanced, quite a bit like some of the Dvoretsky books.

Yeah, I was in a bookshop today and the shopmanager said the same sort thing; quite advanced and hard to understand for 1800- players. He recommened books from Keres and Taimanov. Also John Nunn en Speelman seemed to be nice as well. Difficault to choose one book for strategy.

...Michael Stean's "Simple Chess"? It is is cheap, brief, easy-to-read, and brilliant. Emms acknowledges that it was the inspiration for a book that he wrote with the same name. The website for the Exter Chess Club (which is a great site, check it out!) refers to Stean's book as a "Wonderfully clear discussion of some difficult strategical themes in the middlegame. A little gem."

I have the book and started reading it. It is very deep. Like someone else had said it is for those over the 1800 rating range. Yes the two books are independent of each other. What I understand is that both books are out of print. If anyone has any leads on Move like a GM then I would appreciate the tip. I have been trying to find it and it is rather difficult to find it come up on ebay.
