I was looking at the thread called "how do you mate" which was about the endgame of R&N vs R ... and got to thinking about endgames that endup being harder than one would think. Well so it occurred to me many might benefit to see a
K+Q vs K+R ending forcibly won ... and so wondering if anyone has any examples of such games ? I don't have one, but the stronger side wins within the 50 Move Rule limitation.
I'd be interested too, in seeing such games where the Rook side of it also has a pawn.
With 2 pawns its drawn for sure if the Rooks force seprates the 2 kings, and the Rook protects a pawn which protects the pawn which protects it.
(EG pawns on c3 & d4 with Rook on c5. Or any similar set-up)
This can actually be handy to remember.

I should have said "at LEAST drawn". Tho I think wins by the Rook side will be rare. Would be great to see any of those therefore! Even circumstantial.

The endgamg rook + 1 pawn vs. queen is also definitely drawn, if pawn, rook and king of the rook side are close together. I had that in one of my OTB games, but it's really not exciting: there is just no progress (without some silly mistake, anyway) possible if the pawn protects the rook and the king protects the pawn (and just dances around the other two pieces).

I had that in one of my GK games with a rook, pawn and king against my opponent's king and queen. I think it might be won if the strong king is on a rank behind the pawn to begin with, but in this case it was totally cut off by the rook at the front. As I recall, it was W: Re5, Pf4, Kg4 B:Kc7 Qf1

The book you must look for is: Lehr- und handbuch der endspiele, dritter band by André Cheron.
KQ wins almost anytime over KR, but there is an exception: White: Kh1, Qe6 Black: Kf8, Rg7. Black can force a draw by giving check on h7, g7 and f7. The white king can't go on the e-file. When the white king reach h6 black can play Rh7+ and when white takes the rook it's stalemate. When the white king reach f6 after Rg7+ black plays Rg6+.
KQ vs KR+pawn is often a draw, but in this matter there are also exceptions.

Q vs R+P is often won, not definitely drawn. It mainly depends on where the pawn is. From b7 to g7, for example, Black draws but on a7, h7 and on the third rank, he loses.

If the R takes up the best defensive stand (standing on the 3/6/c/f line to cut off the opposing K), this ending can be very hard to win. Even a decade or so ago, one of the top computers played the R side in a simul vs. several GM's and actually drew several games when the GM's took more than 50 moves to breach the blockade and win the R. I've actually won this ending several times OTB, but fortunately not against a computer! The funniest one was the final position in a game vs. GM Balinas, when I passed up an "obvious" win and instead was about to wind up with Q vs. R--however, since I had already studied the theory of this when I had the earlier Q vs. R games, I knew that I was ALREADY in one of the final "winning zugzwang" positions (BK on h7, BR on g7, WK on f6, WQ on e8), where either Black must move and lose the R or White on move wins by immediately "losing" a move with 1.Qe4+ Kg8 2.Qa8+ Kh7 3.Qe8. My opponent graciously resigned immediately without even waiting for me to Q my P with e8Q, checking his K from h8 to h7 and creating the position given above, so he obviously knew theory as well or better than I.
