12/15/2004 18:55:52 Play online chess | Subject: K&Q vs K&R is a win, but ...
Message: I was looking at the thread called "how do you mate" which was about the endgame of R&N vs R ... and got to thinking about endgames that endup being harder than one would think. Well so it occurred to me many might benefit to see a
K+Q vs K+R ending forcibly won ... and so wondering if anyone has any examples of such games ? I don't have one, but the stronger side wins within the 50 Move Rule limitation.
I'd be interested too, in seeing such games where the Rook side of it also has a pawn.
With 2 pawns its drawn for sure if the Rooks force seprates the 2 kings, and the Rook protects a pawn which protects the pawn which protects it.
(EG pawns on c3 & d4 with Rook on c5. Or any similar set-up)
This can actually be handy to remember.

Message: I should have said "at LEAST drawn". Tho I think wins by the Rook side will be rare. Would be great to see any of those therefore! Even circumstantial.

Message: The endgamg rook + 1 pawn vs. queen is also definitely drawn, if pawn, rook and king of the rook side are close together. I had that in one of my OTB games, but it's really not exciting: there is just no progress (without some silly mistake, anyway) possible if the pawn protects the rook and the king protects the pawn (and just dances around the other two pieces). ——— Player Who Was Too Clever for the Health of His Game — For years, Alexander Morozevich stood out among the best chess players because of his creative play. But with creativity comes unpredictability, and Morozevich has had his ups and downs. Two years ago, Morozevich, a 33-year-old Russian, rose to a career-best ranking of No. 2 in the world. But he has stumbled since then and was at No. 30 before the IV Torneo Internacional A.D. San Juan chess event, which ended Sunday in Pamplona, Spain. He had a disastrous finish and fell out of the Top 35 in the world. What happened? Part of the problem is that he has not played enough; the Pamplona chess tournament was his first in six months. But Morozevich also has had ...

Message: I had that in one of my GK games with a rook, pawn and king against my opponent's king and queen. I think it might be won if the strong king is on a rank behind the pawn to begin with, but in this case it was totally cut off by the rook at the front. As I recall, it was W: Re5, Pf4, Kg4 B:Kc7 Qf1 ——— Chess: A 31-month cliffhanger — Aleksandr Surenovich Dronov of Russia edged Jurgen Bucker of Germany on tiebreak to win the 22nd World Correspondence Chess Championship. If any tournament that lasts 31 months can be called thrilling, this one qualifies. In the endgame of the crucial battle between the rivals, Dronov had an extra Knight but was hampered by the notorious "wrong Rook's pawn." After 91 moves and long after all the other games had finished, he managed to win. Each scored 11 1/2 - 4 1/2. Two-time world chess champion Joop van Oosterom of the Netherlands, the highest-rated correspondence player in history, finished third with 11-5. Tim Murray, the leading American in the 17-player ...

Message: The book you must look for is: Lehr- und handbuch der endspiele, dritter band by André Cheron.
KQ wins almost anytime over KR, but there is an exception: White: Kh1, Qe6 Black: Kf8, Rg7. Black can force a draw by giving check on h7, g7 and f7. The white king can't go on the e-file. When the white king reach h6 black can play Rh7+ and when white takes the rook it's stalemate. When the white king reach f6 after Rg7+ black plays Rg6+.
KQ vs KR+pawn is often a draw, but in this matter there are also exceptions.
——— Michael Adams dominates on way to victory at the British Chess Championship — When Michael Adams won his first five games at the just finished British Chess Championship in Canterbury, there was talk that the 38-year-old Cornishman might emulate Bobby Fischer's legendary 11/11 in the US title contest of 1963. Adams's streak was halted by a couple of draws but he made sure of first prize with 9/10 and a round to spare. More significantly, he advanced to world No18 in his campaign to regain his place among elite chess grandmasters. The recession is causing elite events to shrink, but Adams can now hope for an invitation to Holland's Wijk aan Zee. the best chess tournament in Western Europe. The other debating point at Canterbury was the growing ...

Message: Q vs R+P is often won, not definitely drawn. It mainly depends on where the pawn is. From b7 to g7, for example, Black draws but on a7, h7 and on the third rank, he loses.
Alex ——— Zhao Retakes Lead at Women’s Chess Grand Prix — Zhao Xue of China has once again taken the reins of the fifth Women’s Chess Grand Prix in Ulan Bator, Mongolia. One day after Antoaneta Stefanova of Bulgaria tied Zhao for the lead, the two players squared off in Round 6 on Thursday, with Zhao emerging victorious. She now 5 points. Nipping at her heals are the two top seeds, Humpy Koneru of India and Hou Yifan of China, who have 4.5 points each. They both won on Thursday to keep pace with Zhao. Stefanova is alone in fourth place, another half point back. Zhao handled Stefanova rather easily. She sacrificed a pawn in the opening to gain a lead in development and then proceeded to open up the position, winning her ...

12/23/2004 21:39:54 Play online chess | K+Q vs. K+R Is NOT Simple!
Message: If the R takes up the best defensive stand (standing on the 3/6/c/f line to cut off the opposing K), this ending can be very hard to win. Even a decade or so ago, one of the top computers played the R side in a simul vs. several GM's and actually drew several games when the GM's took more than 50 moves to breach the blockade and win the R. I've actually won this ending several times OTB, but fortunately not against a computer! The funniest one was the final position in a game vs. GM Balinas, when I passed up an "obvious" win and instead was about to wind up with Q vs. R--however, since I had already studied the theory of this when I had the earlier Q vs. R games, I knew that I was ALREADY in one of the final "winning zugzwang" positions (BK on h7, BR on g7, WK on f6, WQ on e8), where either Black must move and lose the R or White on move wins by immediately "losing" a move with 1.Qe4+ Kg8 2.Qa8+ Kh7 3.Qe8. My opponent graciously resigned immediately without even waiting for me to Q my P with e8Q, checking his K from h8 to h7 and creating the position given above, so he obviously knew theory as well or better than I. ——— Michael Adams's tour de force — Michael Adams is on course for the most emphatic victory in the history of the British Chess Championships. With three to play, Adams has 7.5/8 and the nearest challenger is IM Adam Hunt on 6/8. Hunt played a nice game to defeat IM Jovanka Houska and he must face Adams in round nine. Adams’ seventh win was over 2008 champion Stuart Conquest. Play continued into the sixth hour but Adams always held the upper hand after Conquest’s passive opening led to a weakness which Adams fixed, surrounded and then finally captured. At one point Adams had all five of his pieces focussed on the e5 square, behind which stood a backward pawn on e6 which duly fell. The white queen invaded ...
