It's kind of like politics.....just because the thousands of (relatively uninformed) people vote for something that doesn't mean that they individually become a thousand times smarter... Maybe someone can find the quote, but I seem to think that democracy was once called "governing by average" Does anyone really think GP should have been beaten by an average player (I can only imagine how frustrating it would have been for 'big boy ' or 'big girl' grandmasters to invest themselves in analysing the game and making recommendatioins only to have people choosing worse moves.....(although if it really was a drawn endgame I guess that didn't really happen...) I don't think anyone from the World team showed such dedication. Except from Irina Krush, who showed true dedication, the team comprised of a lot of people who merely "looked at the game from time to time". And in this case, quality doesn't breed quantity. A million "quick glances at the position" put together couldn't measure up to world's #1 player, thinking 3 hours per move. Yes, if Irina's suggestion on that 58th move would have reached the voters on time, World would have good drawing chances, but I still liked Kasparov position better in this case. But no matter how you look at it, a fascinating game! Now, it's not like just Irina Krush just lost internet access or something, it'd be more like trying to login to gameknot and finding your account no longer exists. So that day there was no analysis next to Krush's name (Krush had kind of become the leader for the match--the other 3 analysts had sort of given up). Now, as you can imagine, this sort of thing doesn't happen very often, so when it does people are not pleased. Everyone understands that MSN can have problems like any other network, but perhaps they should do a little more to accomodate their top analyst (their only analyst, really) in a critical chess match. Now I get a curious error message "Your browser does not enable cookies". Bullshit! They can't repair such a bug for 3 months? I left that site and began playing here at gameknot. Much better than MSN, where rules such as "3 repetition draw" or "not enough material to win" are not respected. I had people continuing games against me with only kings on the board just because they had a few more seconds on their blitz watches. Not to mention the famous "draw offering" bug. Bill Gates bought the site more than a year ago. He is poor you know, can't afford bettering it. |
