Subject: Kasporov V the World

Message:
I,ve just read that there was a Kasporov versus the world match last year. Where people could vote on moves for 'the World' does anyone know what the outcome was. Did we kick his a**? Please tell me we did (I use 'we' loosely as I wasn't aware of the event). If we didn't WHY NOT???

To Play Better Against Attractive Women, Men Need to Avert Their Eyes — Do men get distracted by and play chess differently against attractive women than against other opponents? Yes, according to a study by Swedish researchers. Called “Beauty Queens and Battling Knights: Risk Taking and Attractiveness in Chess,” the study used a large data set of results from international chess tournaments and cross-referenced them with photographs of 626 of the chess players — almost half of them women — whose attractiveness was rated by at least 50 independent observers. The study concluded, “Our results suggest that male chess players choose significantly riskier strategies when playing against an attractive female opponent, even though this does not ...

Chess grandmasters use twice the brain : Study — It may take years of hard work to become a chess grandmaster, but it gives a real boost to the brain – for working out chess problems, at least. It seems expert chess players use both sides of their brain to process chess tasks, rather than just one. Merim Bilalic at the University of Tübingen in Germany used fMRI to scan the brains of eight international chess players and eight novices while they identified either geometrical shapes or whether the pieces on a chess board were in a check situation. The expert players were quicker at solving the chess problem, activating areas on both sides of their brains as they did so. The novices used just the left side. Bilalic had expected ...

There was a major controversy with Irinia Krush losing access to MSN and being unable to publish her analysis. Anyway, the World blundered in a drawn ending (a move that had been analyzed a week in advance!) and lost quickly.

Chess: The best form of defence — It may be a cliche, but in a tight spot attacking can be the best way forward. RB: Hands up those of you who plumped for 1 Rb1. There's no disgrace if you did. Peter Leko, rated 2743 when he played this game, opted for exactly that and went on to draw. It's the move I thought of when I first came across the game, in Drazen Marovic's Secrets of Positional Chess – but is it the best? After a series of miserable failures on my part, the boot's on the other foot this week – it's Dan's turn to solve the chess puzzle. DK: Black's rook has just swept down to c2 attacking the pawn on b2, and although that could be defended with 1 Rb1, my gut feeling tells me not to look at this too deeply ...

Sounds like a very lame excuse to me. Arent these people supposed to have IQ's of about a zillion. Why didnt she pop down to her local internet cafe and publishe her moves.

Infact I've gone and checked this match up on the web and I smell a rat! There were 4 so called analysts (Irina Krush, Elisabeth Phtz, Florin Felecan, Etienne Bacrot) all teenagers and two of them Kasparov protogees. Is this the best the 'world' could come up with? I demand a rematch!

America Has a New Chess Grandmaster and Three New International Masters — United States chess has rarely, if ever, had a week like the one that ended Saturday. On Saturday, four Americans earned titles at the Berkeley International chess tournament. Samuel Shankland, 19, the reigning United States Junior Champion, became a grandmaster, while Keaton Kiewra, 23, Daniel Naroditsky, 15, and Conrad Holt, 17, all qualified as international masters. Kiewra actually earned a grandmaster norm — the first of three needed for the title — but he still must raise his international rating above 2,400 to satisfy the requirements for the international master title. That is often less difficult than achieving the norms. Tatev Abrahamyan, 22 (she will be 23 on Thursday), earned ...

China Rises, and Checkmates — If there’s a human face on Rising China, it belongs not to some Politburo chief, not to an Internet tycoon, but to a quiet, mild-mannered teenage girl named Hou Yifan. Ms. Hou (whose name is pronounced Ho Ee-fahn) is an astonishing phenomenon: at 16, she is the new women’s world chess champion, the youngest person, male or female, ever to win a world chess championship. And she reflects the way China — by investing heavily in education and human capital, particularly in young women — is increasingly having an outsize impact on every aspect of the world. Napoleon is famously said to have declared, “When China wakes, it will shake the world.” That is becoming ...

The match was open to anyone who had web access... it was handled through Microsoft's Internet Gaming Zone, which is free to the general public.

Members from the "Russian Chess School" were also providing some analysis for the World Team, including Khalifman.

Think about it....

It's kind of like politics.....just because the thousands of (relatively uninformed) people vote for something that doesn't mean that they individually become a thousand times smarter...

Maybe someone can find the quote, but I seem to think that democracy was once called "governing by average"

Does anyone really think GP should have been beaten by an average player (I can only imagine how frustrating it would have been for 'big boy ' or 'big girl' grandmasters to invest themselves in analysing the game and making recommendatioins only to have people choosing worse moves.....(although if it really was a drawn endgame I guess that didn't really happen...)

I was assuming that the 'world' team included the combined skills of all the other GM's. But thinking about it they probably didn't have much to do with it. I do think that a team comprising other top players should be able to overcome the Great One!

According to Kasparov, he spent over 150 hours of analisys on this game. That's almost 3 hours per move. I don't think anyone from the World team showed such dedication. Except from Irina Krush, who showed true dedication, the team comprised of a lot of people who merely "looked at the game from time to time". And in this case, quality doesn't breed quantity.

A million "quick glances at the position" put together couldn't measure up to world's #1 player, thinking 3 hours per move. Yes, if Irina's suggestion on that 58th move would have reached the voters on time, World would have good drawing chances, but I still liked Kasparov position better in this case. But no matter how you look at it, a fascinating game!

was hosting the match. Now, it's not like just Irina Krush just lost internet access or something, it'd be more like trying to login to gameknot and finding your account no longer exists. So that day there was no analysis next to Krush's name (Krush had kind of become the leader for the match--the other 3 analysts had sort of given up). Now, as you can imagine, this sort of thing doesn't happen very often, so when it does people are not pleased. Everyone understands that MSN can have problems like any other network, but perhaps they should do a little more to accomodate their top analyst (their only analyst, really) in a critical chess match.

Kasparov used a program to analyze his games. I used to play a lot in msn zone. Now I get a curious error message "Your browser does not enable cookies". Bullshit! They can't repair such a bug for 3 months? I left that site and began playing here at gameknot. Much better than MSN, where rules such as "3 repetition draw" or "not enough material to win" are not respected. I had people continuing games against me with only kings on the board just because they had a few more seconds on their blitz watches. Not to mention the famous "draw offering" bug. Bill Gates bought the site more than a year ago. He is poor you know, can't afford bettering it.
