thanks kepler. I only wish i'd known about it earlier. i could have made an announcement at my chess club. on reason chess isn't noticed, because it gets ZERO publicity. Didn't Marx say TV was the opiate of the masses. Or was it rap music. Not sure. Hmmm.

Somehow, my wishes are with Garry. Unusual, normally I'm not a kind of 'fan' besides the love I feel for the famous and best soccer team ever: 1.FC Köln.

Go Garry go.

If you are looking for a place to play OTB chess, I often play on saturdays art the Greek Orthodox Church at 32nd and Glisan. The chess is in the back of the building from 11am to 6 pm.

By the way, I applied several days ago to be a Wild Attacker and haven't heard back yet, is there a waiting list?

He has way too much play to offer a draw. It sounds like it was the computer's team, not the computer who declined. They must think they can still win. I wonder why.

Chess news:

Game of the Year Nominee — This is the time of the year when it seems as if everyone and everything is getting nominated for best this, or worst that. The chess world has been part of the action since 1967, when a group of chess experts starting bestowing a “Chess Oscar” on the best player of the year. The competition is now run by the Russian chess magazine “64.” The winner of the Chess Oscar for the last two years was Viswanathan Anand of India, the world champion. (Anyone want to wager that this year’s winner will be Magnus Carlsen of Norway, the 19-year-old who has become the youngest chess player to be ranked No. 1 in the world?) Choosing a best player seems like a reasonable idea. But ...

A Bold Opening for Chess Player Magnus Carlsen — Vladimir Kramnik, former world chess champion and current No. 4, is playing in the first round of the London Chess Classic, the most competitive chess tournament to be played in the U.K. capital in 25 years. Tall, handsome and expressionless, he looks exactly as a man who has mastered a game of nearly infinite variation should: like a high-end assassin. Today, however, he is getting methodically and mercilessly crushed. His opponent is a teenager who seems to be having difficulty staying awake. Magnus Carlsen yawns, fidgets, slumps in his chair. He gets up and wanders over to the other games, staring at the boards like a curious toddler. Every now and then, he returns to ...

For Many People, Holidays Are a Time for Playing — The period around the new year has become one of the busiest times for chess players. Holiday chess tournaments have a long tradition. One of the oldest, the Hastings International Chess Congress in England, has been held every year since 1920-21, with a break during World War II. This year’s tournament began on Dec. 28 and ends Jan. 5. After six rounds, Andrei Istratescu of Romania, Yuri Drozdovskij of Ukraine and Zbynek Hracek of Czech Republic were leading the top section with 5 points, and being chased by a group of eight chess players, including three grandmasters, three international masters and two masters who each had 4.5 points. Hastings is no longer ...
