Chess news:

Anand's appeal to postpone World Chess Championship match turned down — Viswanathan Anand's appeal to postpone his World chess championship match against Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria in view of the volcanic eruption has been turned down by the organising committee. Anand was stranded in Frankfurt on Friday on his way to Sofia, the venue of the chess match, which is scheduled to start next Friday with an opening ceremony on Wednesday. The organising committee confirmed it got an e-mailed request for a three day postponement from Anand and also a word from FIDE about the situation. However, the organisers stuck to their guns and insisted that the opening ceremony should be held as scheduled on Wednesday as it involved ...

Fide world chess championship: is this Topalov's last chance? — On Friday, in Sofia, Veselin Topalov will begin his challenge to Vishy Anand for the unified Fide/classical chess world championship title. The high point of Topalov's career to date was in 2005 when he won the Fide world chess championship tournament at San Luis ahead of Anand, Svidler, Leko and other super grandmasters. It may have been that the format suited Topalov – he has always been considered a stronger tournament than match player. The following year, at Elista, he lost his bid to unseat Anand's predecessor Vladimir Kramnik as classical chess world champion in a match marred by gamesmanship and (unproven) allegations of cheating. Topalov, now 35, will be aware that ...

Indian chess champ braves volcano chaos — World chess champion Viswanathan Anand will square off against his Bulgarian challenger Veselin Topalov in Sofia Saturday in a marathon final starting a day late due to Europe's volcano crisis. Anand will take his seat for the first of 12 games after having had to travel by road from Frankfurt airport after being stranded there by the shutdown of Europe's airspace because of volcanic ash from Iceland. The 40-year old chess grandmaster finally made it to the Bulgarian capital by bus on Tuesday, four days later than planned. The international chess federation FIDE agreed to a one-day delay to the match, less than the three days Anand had sought but hopefully ...
