Brute force or intelligence? The slow rise of computer chess — When you visit the History of Computer Chess exhibit at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California, the first machine you see is "The Turk." In 1770, a Hungarian engineer and diplomat named Wolfgang von Kempelen presented a remarkable invention to the court of Maria Theresa, ruler of Hungary and Austria. It consisted of a mechanical figure dressed in (what Europeans saw as) Oriental garb, presiding over a cabinet upon which a chess board sat. Full of gears ostentatiously placed in a front side drawer, The Turk was cranked up by hand, after which an opponent could sit down and play a game against the dummy. "Even among the skeptics who insisted it was a trick, there was ...

Senate Designates ‘Chess Day’ Before Heading Home — Passing a hard-fought deal to increase the country’s borrowing limit and reduce the budget deficit wasn’t all that the Senate did before recessing on Tuesday — at least for chess players. Overshadowed by the resolution of the fierce congressional debt-ceiling showdown was the Senate’s adoption of a resolution Tuesday designating Oct. 8, 2011 as “National Chess Day.” Introduced by Sen. John Rockefeller (D., W.Va.), the resolution recognizes the game as a “powerful cognitive learning tool” and “encourages the people of the U.S. to observe “National Chess Day” with appropriate programs and activities.” It noted that “many studies have linked chess programs to the improvement of ...

Good record but...

Message:
draws count as half wins; so a good calculation is done summing up wins plus half the draws, as in a tournament. This way his record is about 88%; a little better are cyrano's 96% (+118-0=8!), mine 92%, ghorani's 91%, florinserban's 90%, and a little "worse" are sjoroos's 87% cairo's 86%, mestrinho's and marcocapezza's 85%.

Chess: Knight moves — The finely tuned positional antennae of Ulf Andersson sense a problem requiring a harmonious solution. More from the master of positional play, Ulf Andersson. How did he manage to improve his position? RB: Last week I went for an exchange sacrifice in the game Andersson-Tempone. It wasn't the continuation that Andersson chose, which should perhaps be enough to warn me against the move I am thinking of here – 1…Rd4. If White accepts the offer, 2 Bxd4 then 2…exd4 and the knight, which is pinned to the queen, is lost. But, of course, it's not going to be that simple. White can refuse to play ball and instead go ...

good point Brunetti!

Message:
It is not too hard too play a very careful game on gameknot to avoid losing, but all too often a draw results. More aggressive players may take on some risk and hence lose some games, but they will rack up far more wins than draws with their 'attacking' style.

Rise of computers has lifted game — Bobby Fischer was rarely wrong about chess matters. But in one critical issue, he erred grievously: Late in life, he concluded that chess was played out. Most of the important possibilities in the opening phase had been explored and understood, he thought, and grandmasters’ reliance on computers had taken the creativity out of the game. But it seems that the opposite is true. A complete database of chess games now would be in the millions, not in the tens or hundreds of thousands as in Fischer’s time. And that volume continues to grow as an increasing number of strong chess players, playing an ever larger number of games, dominates chess. Not surprisingly, chess players’ repertoires have ...

1727 vs 1868 Another good point is here Brunetti,
your avergae opponent's rating vs. Allkarlos' average opponent. So you have a 92% vs. 1727 av. allkarlos has a 88% vs. 1868!

Not that all this statistical sh*t matters much, but I get a sense you are a little jealous of the recent admiration that Allkarlos has received. ;)

Armenia Takes Team Title; Chinese Player Is Top Scorer — The Chess Olympiad, which was first held in 1924, is the most elite national team event in the chess world. But the World Team Chess Championship is in some ways more competitive because it includes only 10 squads, so there are no easy matches. This year, Armenia, the No. 4 seed, was the runaway winner at the chess event, which ended on Tuesday in Ningbo, China. It was hardly an upset; the Armenians, behind Levon Aronian, have won two of the last three Chess Olympiads, which are held every two years. China, the No. 6 seed, finished second, and Ukraine lived up to its seeding by winning the bronze medal. Russia, which was the top seed and had won the last two Team Chess Championships, finished ...

I think

Message:
allkarlos should play a 6 game match whith
cyrano

i think every player should strive to draw whatever game he can not win. so in my book allkarlo 's
and cyrano 's records are just perfect.

though taking in account Brunetti has played more 900 games i think he is in totaly diferent category by himself.

Supertitious Opinion !!!

Message:
From the moment I played ALLKARLOS, when his rating was still below 2100 (mine was then 1800 +), i got an instant terrifying feeling that he is probably "Capablanca-Reincarnate"! Take a deeper insight of his games.

Now, what is more hair-raising premonition is his user id ALLKARLOS. Perhaps, that is a German term, but deep inside my feeling, I speculate that it means "ALL LOSE EXCEPT KARL"!!!

Modesty aside, I should have not accepted his offer of TRUCE in our game (I had high regard for him at that time 'coz of his high rating + % results). Perhaps, I should have got the adulation of the only GK player who defeated him.

Take note friends, there are 2 on-going games between ALLKARLOS and BRUNETTI. Who knows? Perhaps, BRUNETTI is "Alekhine-Reincarnate"?!

Message:
...brunetti said "draws count as half wins;" does that also mean that draws count as half losses?if so,then allkarlos has 40 draws that means 40 half losses or 20 losses!! did i go astray in my reasoning?...

Well

Message:
2 draws are neither a win nor a loss, but the associated score is 1, the same as winning 1 game and losing the other one.

The two records +131-0=40 and +151-20=0 are mathematically equivalent; you may prefer the former because of no lossess; one may prefer the latter because of the higher winning percentage. Fischer would probably choose the latter, Capablanca the former; anyway both players have an 88.3% score and the same Elo variations.

the best

Message:
is allkarlos!, cause he is German (I'm, too :), he play's for Germany at GKOL and for GK against CCLA, he has never lost a game! So I think that only cyrano is better than Karl, cause the others all have lost games. Perhaps a draw is a half win, but after brunetti he is only the fifth. I think that isn't right. I wait for the three games between allkarlos and brunetti. Then we'll know who is better.

mickel

cyrano & allkarlos

Message:
I don't think they are unbeatable
just two ways:
1. they are super-GrandMasters on the level of world champions like Kasparov and Kramnik
2. or they're a Greatest Cheaters using.... but I'm in doubt what program should they use... Deepest Fritz, maybe...
I really don't think that average level of other GK players is not enough to beat them
Outstanding record... I envy :))))
