Subject: Could you help with analysis, please?

Message:
I recently played this game against better rated player and I think I had a good attack but it didn't really work out. Something also went wrong before move 10, maybe the 9. Re8... Could you give some comments about this game? You can see that the game got quite open, a bit too open for me to see it all...

Here is the move list, board #248571

1. e4 e5
2. Nf3 Nc6
3. Bc4 Nf6
4. d4 exd4
5. O-O Bc5
6. Re1 O-O
7. Bg5 d6
8. h3 h6
9. Bf4 Re8
10. Qd3 Ne5
11. Bxe5 dxe5
12. Bxf7+! Kh8 (I didn't see this Bxf7+ beforehand, I decided to trade a Rook to bishop since it granted better attackin prospects and King was safer.)
13. Bxe8 Qxe8
14. c3 Nh5 (on with the attack)
15. cxd4 Nf4
16. Qe3 Bxh3 (!)
17. Nxe5! Nxg2 (!?)
18. Qb3 Bxd4 (should have taken the Rook?)
19. Nf7+ Kh7
20. Ng5+ Kh8
21. Rd1 Ne3 (?!)
22. Nf7+! Kh7
23. Rxd4 (I resigned)
1-0

Regards,

Teemu

if you moved 21...Nf4 instead of 21...Ne3, you would have a win already.

Kramnik Takes Early Lead in Bilbao Final Masters — The Bilbao Final Masters started Saturday and Vladimir Kramnik of Russia got off to a quick start by beating Magnus Carlsen of Norway in Round 1. The Final Masters was conceived as a championship for the winners of the elite chess tournaments of the year, including Linares and Corus (now sponsored by Tata Steel, which bought Corus) among others. The idea ran into trouble last year when the prize fund was cut because of the global financial downturn and Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria, the-ranked qualifier, declined to participate. The other problem the Final Masters has had is consistency. M-Tel was not played this year, and there have been additions to the list of eligible chess tournaments, including ...

Ukraine edges out Russia in World Chess Olympiad — Russia again failed to end its gold medal drought at the biennial Chess Olympiad this week despite home advantage. Ukraine, whose No1, Vasily Ivanchuk, also won the individual top-board gold, narrowly edged the hosts with Israel third. Russia's last success was in 2002, since when Ukraine and Armenia have each had two victories. England, seeded 12th, proved inconsistent and finished 24th despite Michael Adams's win over the world No1, Magnus Carlsen, and a fine unbeaten 6/8 by Gawain Jones, 22, on bottom board. Carlsen himself lost three games and now has only a small lead over India's world chess champion, Vishy Anand, in the global rankings. The most significant gain was by ...

Class Struggle and Fabergé’s Imagination Played Out on a Board — In the fall of 1977, George Dean, a Detroit doctor and chess set collector, received a call from a man with a thick Russian accent offering to sell a chess set made by the legendary jeweler Peter Carl Fabergé. Dr. Dean knew that Fabergé had made a set in 1905, but the one offered for sale was supposedly made in 1915. Dr. Dean borrowed a few chess pieces — which were made of silver and gilded silver — and flew to London to ask a renowned art dealer if the set was made by Fabergé. As he entered the dealer’s shop, he was astonished to see the 1905 chess set on display. Dr. Dean immediately asked to buy it, though it was not for sale. After much haggling, the dealer gave in and sold it. The dealer also ...

Ukraine Wins Chess Olympiad — To win gold medals at any chess olympiad, you need exceptional performances of at least two chess players who know how to take risks and collect points. But you also need a few others who can steady the team -- solid players hard to defeat. If that is not enough, you need some luck. The team of Ukraine had it all at the 39th Chess Olympiad in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, that finished Sunday. Led by the amazing GM Vasyl Ivanchuk, Ukraine clinched the gold undefeated, winning eight matches, tying three and collecting 19 points. Russia's top chess team finished with the silver medal with 18 points. Israel tied for third place with Hungary with 17 points, but won the bronze on a better tiebreak. ...

22. Nf7+?? doesn't deserve a !, since after 22. Rxd4 white would have simply won easily. Likewise, instead of simply giving up with 22... Kh7??, you could have played 22... Qxf7! with good chances to draw or even possibly win after 23. Qxf7 Nxd1 24. Nc3 Nxf2.

Vassily Ivanchuk Dominates the Chess Olympiad — Every chess game is between just two people, but players can be organized into teams in which individual results are added up in a combined score. But just as in sports, not every chess player is a good teammate. In chess, a bad teammate is one who does not try hard enough when the team needs a win, or who loses a game by pressing too hard for a win when the team needs only a draw. A good teammate will adapt to minimize risks. Vassily Ivanchuk has a reputation as a good teammate, particularly in the biennial World Chess Olympiads that are the game’s pre-eminent team competitions. Before this year, Ivanchuk, 41, of Ukraine, had competed in 11 Chess Olympiads and had been on ...
