7/21/2002 11:28:39 | Subject: Non-GK ratings
Message: Here is a sort of question sheet for folks at GK! This is just for fun, not for comparing different rating systems or to have a debate about credibility of internet ratings etc (IMO different rating systems are not comparable anyway). Please respond ppl!
An example
My rating here at GK : 1630 (provisional)
My other ratings...
USCF (U.S chess federation) rating : 1470
www.chessclub.com : 1590
www.yahoo.com : 1770

Message: Why On-Line chess ratings mean nothing in the chess world... Do you think this fellow Peppe could receive the same win/lose/draw ratio... He is now in 59th place on gameknot in just 12 games played... Try that in the real chess world...

Message: Yes you are right, although please keep in mind my rating here is still provisional, and at least I am quite sure my true level here is lower than my currect rating shows.
Win & lose ratio is more or less meaningless if one has only 12 games played, like I have right now. Naturally in corr games one of my biggest weaknesses - inconsistency - has less effect since I have more time and therefore simple blunders occur less frequently in my games, compared to otb play.
If you read "Ratings" thread you can find my personal opinion about internet ratings, and once you read them, you will find out I agree 100% with you here. Online ratings mean nothing in real world, and yes, my (over)rating here is a good example of that. BUT like I pointed out, this thread is for fun and interest only - it is NOT for debate or boasting etc etc etc. This is ONLY because at least I am interested to see where people here play, and what level they represent in otb or even internet (blitz) play, and I hope others are too?
BTW, those example ratings were not my ratings :)

My Chessworld rating is 2195 (13 wins - no defeats)
Globalworld rating is 1883 (2 wins - no defeats)
Atlantic Chess rating is 1425 (11 wins, one draw - no defeats)
The best two sites to play on are GK and ChessWorld. I have pretty well given up on Atlantic but I am helping to Beta test the Globalworld site, how could I refuse to help when it is run by Alexandra Kosteniuk........!!!

Message: GK - Around 1700
Yahoo - around 1490 last time I player
My reallife rating was about 1880, but that was 10-11 years ago and I havent played a tournament since then.
So many people cheat on games like Yahoo, I played one person and beat them quite easily in the first game, second game it was like playing someone else. First game they did not seem to have any opening knowledge, second game they played the sicilian like a pro and beat me easily in the endgame.

SUBTRACT(400)POINTS AND YOU GET(1887)AROUND WHAT MY GAMEKNOT CHESS RATING IS!

I thought master title is given based on FIDE rating only, and therefore master strength is measured in similar way.

7/30/2002 06:45:10 | Master title
Message: is given by national federations, with different parameters (an Australian master may be much stronger or much weaker of a Canadian one, I don't know the respective criteria).
FIDE awards only GM, IM and FM (FIDE Master) titles. The latter is the "simpliest" to achieve, being awarded on reaching a 2300 FIDE rating and having played at least 24 (if I remember well) rated games.

7/30/2002 08:07:01 | Alex,
Message: Thanks for correction.
One thing that has surprised me is many players here have higher otb rating in comparison to GK rating. I know the (national) otb rating of few players here, and clearly GK rating tends to be higher in comparison to their otb rating. Like Alex already pointed out national ratings have some differences, but there is less variance than between internet ratings given by different sites. I have played at www.pogo.com and www.kasparovchess.com and can say for example **** at pogo defitenitely cant expect as good rating at KC. Also, there are differences between different levels - for example at Pogo it´s relatively easy to reach 2000+ but after that (due the rating system) it´s more difficult. This means if one is 1700 at pogo, one can expect much lower rating at KC, whereas Pogo&KC ratings of someone 2100 (at Pogo) are propably closer to each other. Of course there are other factors too, like used time controls, choosed opponents etc...
Anyway, so far it has been interesting to read where people here play, and how many have otb experience and otb rating.
Keep the posts coming ppl :)

Chess news:
Gata Kamsky qualifies for 2011 candidates — American chess has a munificent sponsor, Rex Sinquefield. The retired fund manager has bankrolled the last two US chess championships, the latest with a $170,000 prize fund, in his Missouri home city Saint Louis where he has created a state of the art chess club which hosted the title event. The 2009 chess champion, Hikaru Nakamura, was stimulated to hone his inconsistent talent and is now ranked in the world top 20. Its format, a 24-player Swiss, included top US women plus Ray Robson, 15, who has since become a grandmaster. The 2010 championship last month went to Gata Kamsky, the former chess prodigy who went close to the world title in 1996, gave up to become ...
Chess Notes — The decisive game in the Anand/Topalov chess match, Game 12, was oddly a well-trodden Queen’s Gambit Declined, the Lasker Variation. However, Anand as black varied slightly from the normal variation, electing to defer equality for a move and then getting a bishop for a knight but putting a queen bishop pawn at risk. In effect on move 21, Anand seemed to be willing to take a draw with the black pieces, but Topalov would not repeat moves. Topalov had weakened his king side slightly, and apparently ...
11 Chess Tournaments Over 2 Weeks Create a Competitive Logjam — The past couple of weeks should have dispelled any doubts about the vitality of chess. It would be hard to imagine a busier schedule. Last weekend, no fewer than eight chess tournaments were in play. In Odessa, Ukraine, the World Rapid Cup was won by Sergey Karjakin, a Ukrainian who now plays for Russia. In Malmo, Sweden, Anish Giri, 15, a Dutch chess grandmaster, took first in the Sigeman & Company tournament. And in Paraguay, Eduardas Rozentalis of Lithuania coasted to victory at the Asunción Copa Roggio. Meanwhile, 6 players out of a field of more than 200 tied for first at the Star Chess School tournament in Bhubaneswar, India, and Martyn Kravtsiv of ...
