Win & lose ratio is more or less meaningless if one has only 12 games played, like I have right now. Naturally in corr games one of my biggest weaknesses - inconsistency - has less effect since I have more time and therefore simple blunders occur less frequently in my games, compared to otb play. If you read "Ratings" thread you can find my personal opinion about internet ratings, and once you read them, you will find out I agree 100% with you here. Online ratings mean nothing in real world, and yes, my (over)rating here is a good example of that. BUT like I pointed out, this thread is for fun and interest only - it is NOT for debate or boasting etc etc etc. This is ONLY because at least I am interested to see where people here play, and what level they represent in otb or even internet (blitz) play, and I hope others are too? BTW, those example ratings were not my ratings :) |

So many people cheat on games like Yahoo, I played one person and beat them quite easily in the first game, second game it was like playing someone else. First game they did not seem to have any opening knowledge, second game they played the sicilian like a pro and beat me easily in the endgame. |

I thought master title is given based on FIDE rating only, and therefore master strength is measured in similar way. |

FIDE awards only GM, IM and FM (FIDE Master) titles. The latter is the "simpliest" to achieve, being awarded on reaching a 2300 FIDE rating and having played at least 24 (if I remember well) rated games. Alex |

I know the (national) otb rating of few players here, and clearly GK rating tends to be higher in comparison to their otb rating. Like Alex already pointed out national ratings have some differences, but there is less variance than between internet ratings given by different sites. I have played at www.pogo.com and www.kasparovchess.com and can say for example **** at pogo defitenitely cant expect as good rating at KC. Also, there are differences between different levels - for example at Pogo it´s relatively easy to reach 2000+ but after that (due the rating system) it´s more difficult. This means if one is 1700 at pogo, one can expect much lower rating at KC, whereas Pogo&KC ratings of someone 2100 (at Pogo) are propably closer to each other. Of course there are other factors too, like used time controls, choosed opponents etc... Anyway, so far it has been interesting to read where people here play, and how many have otb experience and otb rating. Keep the posts coming ppl :) |
Chess news: Defensive chess masterclass -- Alexander Morozevich gave a master class in how to play the Gruenfeld Defence as he opened his campaign at the $200,000 Russian Chess Championship Superfinal at Moscow. Morozevich outplayed Konstantin Sakaev, a late substitute for Alexander Grischuk who is unwell. Here are the key points of the chess game. a) 4.cxd5 The Exchange Variation. White creates a strong centre. If this becomes mobile Black will struggle in the centre and on the kingside. b) 7...c5 Black counterattacks the key square d4. 8.d5 allows Bxc3+ c) 10.Rc1 White invites cxd4 cxd4 when he will control the c file in the resulting chess endgame ... A well-calculated sacrifice -- Peter Svidler leads the Russian Chess Championship Superfinal with a perfect score after three rounds. Svidler defeated the favourite Alexander Morozevich in an 87 move chess game, gradually outplaying the world number two from a position where he held more space. At one stage Svidler was three pawns up but he returned two and reached a technically won rook and pawn endgame. In round three Svidler’s finely calculated queen sacrifice and king march forced a brilliant win. The position with queen against two rooks and knight was complex but once Black’s runs out of checks White’s mate threats decide. ...
