Forum Chess Quiz Anyone up for a Chess Quiz? I wouldn't mind organising a quiz, you could just send me a message with your answers and I mark and then I post results. Quiz could be about anything: openings, famous players (DOB, country etc), FIDE ratings etc. Some could be ridculously hard/stupid but it will be fun to test chess knowledge against others.

Feedback would be nice on:
-How many participants.
-How long the test should take
-Suggestions for TYPES of questions (not questions themselves)
-How many questions in total

Absoulutly no databases, web searches or any other help from external links.

I will only start this if enough (5-10) people reply to the post.

Some thoughts Example questions:

How to spell Anand's (rated second in the world) last name?
Topolov + Anand were once 1 point apart in their rating. Now Topolov's rating has increased to 2813 True or false?
Which of the Polgar sisters is rated the highest?
How many GM's does Russia have?
A. 156
B. 102
C. 54
D. 265

Just some examples. Please tell me if they are too easy or too hard.

Could be fun. I'll even answer one question right now:

Q: "How to spell Anand's (rated second in the world) last name?"
A: A-n-a-n-d

far1ey ... Yes, very interersting concept.
I dont like the idea of the questions such as How many Grandmasters in Russia ... which is (a) so esoteric to most of the world, but worse (b)subject to chance at any moment. While GM's may not pop-up out of toasters ... they might immigrate out at anytime, or die. etc.
I dont like those being questions as if we should Know an answer to. Tho it would be interesting to know such things just given as a statement of fact.
To me, that type of information might be more interesting as a fact sheet, rather than guess and flip pages to find an answer. But that is just my op. Perhaps others
thrive on that, like Jeopardy or Trivial Pursuits. If they are good at it.
In a test form, I would prefer Questions more on the order of how to play, strategic
concepts, etc. If it were to be some type of competition.
Eager to see what others think about it all... CA

"Q: "How to spell Anand's (rated second in the world) last name?"
A: A-n-a-n-d"

Haha ;)

I think it could be fun too, I think the numerical questions would probably be better as an estimate without multiple choice and participants getting points depending on how close they are (or just points for the closest answer).

you could have several forums running - one with the questions, another with the 'contestants' answers, another with the correct answers (or they could be posted on your bio page or on a club forum).

I love the idea!

Excelent... Thankyou all for your responces. I will get the questions together and post them ASAP.

chilliman , I like the idea about several Forums running, but then someone can just cheat by copying answers from one of the posted answer forums. Therefore I assume you mean posting the contestants answers after the "time bank" has run out?

Should there be a time bank/limit for the quiz? If so some times would be nice.

PS: lol gangstaman very funny :) Change that to Anand's FIRST name.

hmmmmm Not many responces to the q... If you guys aint given me answers I aint gonna waste my time doing this then...

What's the Q? Is it still the Anand one? If so then I guess its something like Vishwanathan - that's how I pronounce it anyway. :)

you can do it either way if people are going to cheat on the quiz then they will probably already be cheating using chess computers etc to play on this site also.

a time limit is a very good idea, if you prefer to post questions only initially then answers at a later stage.

it may not even be necessary to have participants post their answers, instead you just post the q's in one forum and the a's in another.

either way you look at it you have come up with a great idea.

one tip I can give you re your final comment above: "Not many responces to the q... If you guys aint given me answers I aint gonna waste my time doing this then..."

if you want to do this don't expect other readers of these forums to assist you - if you want to do this, do it for yourself. many players here will most likely participate but may not wish to assist in doing the work so don't expect them to be enthusiastic about your idea/project. it is a great idea though and seems to be original - why not just make it the way you want it?
